About

Single Workshops are short, freestanding programs on specific topics that may be of interest to a wide range of practitioners. They provide training opportunities for those who have completed the multi-module, ongoing programs, as well as for those new to our programs who are interested in the single workshop format for their learning.

We think of the brain as perceiver, rememberer, and thinker – but it is also the organizer and director of information. It is a waystation or central distribution point for past experiences and beliefs.

In the last century, we assumed the brain was the boss of most of the common functions of humanness, and therefore responsible for any bad thoughts, behaviors, or feelings. More recent science and somatic knowledge now views the brain as a contributor and distributor of information.

The brain is a responsive end organ. What brains do is determined by other areas and parts of the body. If there is a disturbance in the body, then the brain will become active.

We will use the current understandings of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, in conjunction with the latest information from somatics, to uncover ways to encourage a fuller and more kind relationship with our brain and brain function – to befriend our brain. This is an experiential workshop about what we can do in somatics that helps this friendly relationship: body awareness, reflective relationship, use of intentional touch.

Narrative plays a very important part in how personal identity is formed and understood. In addition to the cognitive narrative, there is also a somatic narrative, held not in the mind but in the body. In particular, our interoceptive “vocabulary” is used to help explain and understand inner experiences, to make sense of how the somatic self unfolded and responded to experience.

As clinicians we often have the role of helping our clients update and change their life narratives. In this workshop we will explore touch-based methods for helping the somatic narrative evolve as well.

In this workshop we will be specifically engaging the somatic and behavioral patterns affiliated with primary emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, excitement, gratitude, and joy. For each of these affects we will consider things such as body changes that occur, the pro-social value of the emotion, and the information conveyed by the emotion.

This workshop will continue the explorations begun in the Somatics of Emotions workshop, delving more deeply into complex emotions such as wonder, heartbreak, despair, betrayal, humiliation, and anguish. We will consider the developmental tasks related to these emotions, their pro-social value, and their potential transitions into emotions such as gratitude, excitement, and joy.

Many trauma therapists find that working with traumatic coupling dynamics is the most challenging aspect of the process of renegotiating traumatic experiences and the affiliated symptoms of unresolved trauma. This workshop will provide a model that is simple enough to be understandable for those who are just starting out in their work with coupling dynamics, yet nuanced enough to support the most experienced clinician in their ongoing skills development.

If the concept of traumatic coupling dynamics is new to you, you can see a more detailed description on our Resource page, here.
